Routine media replacement is essential for maintaining filtration efficiency, protecting downstream equipment, and ensuring long-term performance of your Everfilt® sand media filter. Whether you’re working on a vertical tank, skid-mounted system, or a custom configuration, the process is straightforward with the right tools and a little preparation.

Tools & Supplies You’ll Need
Socket or wrench set
Flathead screwdriver or pry bar
Shovel or vacuum for media removal
New media (sand, gravel, or specialty blend per system spec)
Clean bucket, bin, or wheelbarrow
Garden hose or wash-down sprayer
PPE: gloves, eye protection, dust mask
Safety First
Before you begin, ensure the system is safe to service:
Shut off power to the filtration system.
Close all inlet & outlet valves.
Depressurize the tank.
Open the drain valve & allow all internal pressure to release.
Some units drain through the discharge manifold; others require opening the media drain port at the bottom of each tank.
*Never open any covers or fittings until the tank is fully depressurized.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Drain the Tank
Open the drain valve at the bottom of the filter.
Allow all water to fully drain.
Leave the drain valve open during servicing to prevent residual water buildup.
2. Remove the Top Cover or Manway
Most Everfilt® tanks include a top-mounted media access port.
Loosen & remove the grooved coupling or flanged lid.
Take off the cover or manway.
Remove any risers, spray assemblies, or internal components as needed.
Pro tip: Snap a few photos to simplify reassembly later.
3. Remove the Old Media
Use a vacuum or scoop to extract the existing sand & gravel.
Avoid contacting or damaging the underdrain/lateral system, as it’s critical for proper flow distribution.
Dispose of old media following local regulations, as it may contain captured contaminants from system operation.

4. Inspect the Interior
Before refilling, conduct a quick health check:
Look for corrosion, coating wear, or rust.
Inspect underdrains/laterals for cracks or broken components.
Check welds, fittings, & interior hardware.
Rinse the tank interior with a low-pressure hose to clear debris.
5. Refill with New Media
Verify the correct media type and quantity using your Everfilt® system manual or specification sheet.
Typical Media Layers:
Bottom gravel support bed:
Usually ¾" gravel
Refer to manual for correct volume or weight
Top sand or specialty media layer:
Graded silica sand (typically 0.45–0.55 mm)
Depth varies by tank size; confirm if unsure
Filling Tips:
Add media slowly to keep layers even.
Maintain appropriate freeboard, typically 30%.
This often means stopping 2–3 inches below the top weld seam.
Do not overfill; media needs room to expand during backwash cycles.
6. Reassemble the Tank
Reinstall all internal components in the order they were removed.
Replace the manway lid/cover & tighten evenly.
Make sure all gaskets are clean, seated properly, & free of debris to prevent leaks.
7. Flush & Restart the System
Close the drain valve.
Gradually refill the tank with clean water; slow filling helps the media settle & reduces trapped air.
Run a full backwash cycle to clear fine particles & dust.
Follow with a rinse cycle until the discharge water is clear.
Restore the system to normal operation & check for leaks or irregular flow.
Pro Tips from Everfilt®
Label hoses & fittings during disassembly; this cuts reassembly time in half.
If media becomes hard or clumped, check system flow & verify backwash rates meet Everfilt® specifications.
Everfilt® recommends full media replacement every 3–5 years, depending on water quality & loading.
For systems with minor media loss, adding 2 inches of new sand per year can help maintain performance.
