Sand filters are used to remove particles from process water, waste water, irrigation water, storm water, cooling water, swimming pool water, and water in fountains and other water features.  A sand filter removes particles as small as 40 micron.

Multi-media filters are used when particles smaller than 40 micron must be removed.  The smallest particle that can be removed is 5 micron.  These filters are often required for industrial process water, drinking water, water that will go through a carbon filter, a reverse osmosis unit or an ion exchange,r or for wastewater where the water is to be recycled or must meet more stringent regulatory standards for discharge.
